Ed Nulter was born in West Virginia but came to Huntsville in 1964 as a teacher and basketball coach at Chapman Middle School. He liked the job so much that he stayed on, influencing the lives of thousands of student-athletes for nearly 35 years. Nulter graduated from Parkersville High School in 1957 and later earned an undergraduate degree at Bethel College in 1962 and a Masters degree at Alabama in 1968. Nulters basketball teams won 417 games while at Chapman including 14 City Championships and finished second five times. He was also voted Chapmans Teacher of the Decade in 1991. His first encouragement in sports came from Jack Hart, the golf pro at Parkersville County Club, where he began to caddie at the age of 12 and in 1957 he became the state high school golf champion. Nulter has coached four players that have already been inducted into this Hall of Fame and eleven of his former players have gone on to coaching careers. Nulter says to develop his philosophy of coaching he has borrowed the coaching techniques of his junior high and high school coaches, the fairness of co-worker Wade Smith, the caring and game strategy of longtime Lee High coach Jerry Dugan and the toughness and discipline of Vince Lombardi.
