Wendall Payne was born in Huntsville and later attended Huntsville High School. A newspaper clipping from 1937 recounts the exploits of a halfback named Jean Harlow in the Florence Yellow Jackets football victory over Huntsville High. But there was also this paragraph in the newspaper: In passing out laurels, the playing of Wendell (Brother) Payne, Huntsvilles triple-threat star, cant be overlooked. Brother was in there every minute of the game, passing to the spot, getting off nice kicks, and showing excellent form lugging the ball. Payne played the entire season in 1939 - 36 full quarters, without ever coming out of a game. He was named to the all-state team and received the Acme Club award as the citys most outstanding football player. While at Huntsville High he lettered five years and once kicked 13 straight drop-kicks through the goal post. Payne credits his father for teaching him to play fair, obey the rules, always try your best and never to brag about your accomplishments, but Coach Milton Frank was also a great influence on his life because he was such a great coach and teacher.
