Induction into the Huntsville, Madison County Hall of Fame is the latest in a long line of honors from Franky L. Smith, one of the best football players in the history of Alabama A&M University. After a fine high school career at Jackson-Olin in Birmingham, Smith signed a scholarship at A&M, where he became a two-time All-American. He was Alabama A&Ms male athlete of the year and the most valuable player on the football team in 1977. Smith was taken in the seventh round of the 1978 NFL draft by the Denver Broncos. After two season in Denver, he became the starter at right tackle for the Kansas City Chiefs. He later played three years in the Canadian Football League before closing his football career in the old United State Football League. Smith was an assistant football coach at Tuskegee for three years from 1985-87 and served as an assistant coach at Hampton University for seven years before returning to Alabama A&M as the offensive line coach for Ken Pettiford in1994. Smith was inducted into the A&M Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995 and the Athletic Booster Club Hall of Fame last year. The person who had the greatest impact on my athletic career was Coach Robert Dickerson at Jackson-Olin, Smith said. He saw to it that I would attend college. Going to college was the furthest thing from my mind, but he saw something in me that I didnt see myself.
