Steve Bolt was one of the greatest track athletes to come out of Huntsville. While a student at Grissom High School, he set the indoor and outdoor mile records that still stand today. In 1973, he was voted the Best High School Miler by the Track and Field News. Steve signed a track scholarship to the University of Alabama. While at Alabama, Steve was an eight time S.E.C. champion in track and cross-country. Steve was also named All-American three times while at Alabama. In 1977, Steve became the first person in S.E.C. history to run the mile in under four minutes. He still holds the S.E.C. indoor mile and two-mile records. Since college, Steve has become an accomplished road racer, winning numerous marathons including the inaugural Huntsville Rocket City Marathon in 1977 and again in 1978, and the International Daffodil Marathon in Stockport England in 1982 and 1984. Steve is one of a very few people in the world who has run both a sub four minute mile and a sub 2:15 marathon.
