Buck Watson began his athletic career at Dekalb County High school where he was a three-year letterman in football, baseball, and basketball. During his senior year, Buck was named to the All-County basketball team and to the All-Tri-State Football Team. He played in the Alabama Football All Star game in 1951. After graduation, Buck signed a scholarship to play football at Vanderbilt University. He was a three-year starter for the Commodores, and during his junior and senior seasons, started both ways averaging 56 minutes per game. Following his senior year at Vandy, Buck played in the Blue-Gray All-Star game. He was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League as the first lineman taken in the 1955 draft. He was unable to compete for the Eagles due to back surgery, but was selected the following year by the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League. After an injury in spring training forced his retirement from football, Buck moved to Lafayette where he coached football for three years before moving to Huntsville.
