In the mid-1960s, a period many regard as the heyday of high school football in the city of Huntsville, Carl McCulley was one of the brightest stars. At a stocky 5-foot-8 and 160 pounds, McCulley was an All-City running back at Lee High School in both 1965 and 1966, and was named All-TVC in football in 1967. He was also an All-State wrestler for the Generals in 1967 as well as president of his senior class. McCulley went on to an outstanding college career at Florence State, now the University of North Alabama. He was the Lions leading rusher as a junior and a senior and was named Most Valuable Back in 1969 and MVP at both Florence and for the Gulf South Conference in 1970. The District 27 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics coaches also named Carl as their Most Valuable Player in 1970. He was a U.S. Army officer for the Special Forces A team from 1972-75 and an Alabama National Guard officer for a Special Forces Battalion from 1975-80 while also working as an engineer during the same time frame. McCulley says he owes special debts of gratitude to his mother, Mrs. Olene McCulley, to his older brother, George, and to former Lee High football coach Keith Wilson. My mother gave me the caring, patience and love of a mother, says McCulley. My brother George provided me with the financial support that enabled me to play in all sports. Without this support, I would never have been able to participate in any sports activities and probably would never have had the opportunity to attend college. McCulley holds a special place in his heart for Keith Wilson. The one man who was responsible most for my success as an athlete was Coach Wilson, says McCulley. He was able to take a kid with little talent and no size and turn him into a person who had desire, character and leadership. I owe him the gratitude for putting me in a position to achieve the success I had as a high school and college athlete. McCulley, who was born Nov. 19, 1948 in Carrollton, AL, now lives in Houston, AL, where he has been a salesman since 1980. He and his wife Cheryl have one son, Jeff.
