Johnnie Becton was born and grew up in Mississippi. He received his BS Degree in Business Administration from Mississippi State University. After college, Johnnie was drafted into the army in 1951 and served in Korea with the 25th Division. After his service in the Army was completed, Johnnie continued with the Army Reserve for over 36 years. When Johnnie Becton moved to Huntsville and went to work for the Huntsville City Schools, little did we realize what an impact he would have on the lives of all the people that he came in contact with over the next 40 years. His title was Director of Transportation and Safety with the school system, and all the local coaches learned that they could depend on him to get them to and from athletic events on time. In addition to transporting athletes in all sports, he has worked at Milton Frank for over 15 years running the scoreboard and clock. He has also worked as a clock operator for basketball and football for many of the county schools. Johnnie has always been very active with the Boy Scouts and in 2004 received the Whitney M. Young Service Award for outstanding service to youth in rural and urban areas. He is also a charter member of the Lions Club and has served as District Governor as well as Past President and Secretary. Johnnie has attended and supported athletic events at Butler High School since 1958. He is a great admirer of Coach John Meadows and had this to say about Coach Meadows, Coach Meadows has had a big impact on my life in his dedication to youth, his family, his church and his friends. He is second to none. Tom Drake, Grissom Principal, said, Johnnie Becton is an honorable man, who has served Huntsville City Schools with integrity and efficiency and was appreciated by all administrators and coaches. Johnnie has been married to Rebecca Kilpatrick Becton for 50 years and they have three daughters: Juanita Lamb, Mildred Roberts and Susan Jordan. Johnnie and Rebecca also have four grandchildren.
