Max Burleson began his athletic career at Hackleburg High School in Hackleburg, AL and went on to be a three sport letterman at Florence State University. While at Florence State, Max was named to the 1956 NAIA All-American Football team. Coach Burleson began his coaching career in 1960 at Lauderdale High School. In. 1963, he moved to Lee High School where he was the head baseball coach and an assistant football coach. Coach Burlesons Generals won a state title in baseball during his tenure. Coach Burleson became the first head football coach at Johnson High School in 1973, and his teams there compiled a 52-19-2 record during his tenure. He moved back to Lee as the head football coach in 1982 and remained there until his death, on the practice field, in 1984. Several of his former players fondly remember that, if Coach turned his hat around, they would start running wind sprints until the cows came home. Coach Burleson is being posthumously inducted into The Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame.
