Mike Adcock was born in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, but moved to Madison County at the age of one. Mike attended Johnson High School and graduated in 1980. While at Johnson, he played under Head Coach Max Burleson during both his sophomore and junior season, and under John Inman his senior year. He started all three years at Johnson and during his senior year played both offense and defense. Mike was selected to the All-City teams both as a junior and a senior and made the All-State team as a senior. He was one of the starting linemen in the Alabama High School Athletic Association All Star game. After high school, Mike signed a scholarship with Coach Bryant at the University of Alabama. During his playing years, Alabama compiled a 35-12-2 record and Mike started in 36 of these games. These wins included some of the most memorable in school history; they included Coach Bryants 315th victory, Alabamas 600th win and Coach Bryants final game. He had the opportunity to play on a SEC Championship team and four bowl games while at Alabama. Mike played in the 1980 and the 1981 Cotton Bowl, the 1982 Liberty Bowl and the 1983 Sun Bowl. During his senior year, he was selected first team All-SEC and Honorable Mention All-American and his season was capped with the victory over fifth-ranked SMU in the Sun Bowl. Mike reflected on his athletic career with the following comments, Looking back over the years I realize many people have had an impact on my athletic accomplishments. I realize that I had many coaches in my life but two of my coaches stand out as the ones who mostly molded me. Coach Paul Parvin, my offensive line coach at Johnson High School, started my opportunity by teaching me the fundamentals of my position and how to work hard to achieve my goals. The other man who molded my character and ability to play the sport of football is Coach Bryant. Off the field he treated his players like his own children and/or grandchildren by teaching us valuable lessons in life I still carry today. On the field he taught us how to be winners. He taught us the correct way to be a good winner and on occasion a good loser.
