Mike Wilbourn was born in Madison County and attended Lee High School. He was one of the great two-sport stars at Lee, excelling in football and baseball. He was a three year starter in both sports and made All State in football and baseball. Mike was selected to the All-City Football Team on offense in his Junior year and was selected to both the Offensive and Defensive Teams as a Senior. He was named as the Huntsville Quarterback Club's Offensive Player of the Year as a Senior, and he was also named to the All Mid-South Team, which included the top players from Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee. In 1971, Letterman Magazine listed Mike as an All American. Mike Wilbourn had the distinction in baseball of playing on two state semi-finalist teams and one state championship team. He was selected as a starter in the East-West Baseball Game both as a Junior and as a Senior. He was named to the North-South All-Star Game for the state's top players as a Senior. After high school, Mike signed a football scholarship with Vanderbilt University. He lettered two years at Vanderbilt, and played in the 1974 Peach Bowl. Mike had this to say about the people that have had a great impact on his life: "From a young age, I was blessed to have two loving parents who encouraged all my athletic endeavors. They were committed to my participation and were always present. I was very fortunate to have great coaches in my life from junior high through college. Prior to high school, my associations with Hub Myhand, Troy Hinton, Ed Nulter, George Fletcher and Ray Walker were great experiences. They prepared me well for high school. During high school, Jerry Dugan, Max Burleson, John Dudley and Jim Blair convinced me I could play. Keith Wilson was my teacher and mentor; his dedication to teaching and spending endless hours on coaching prepared me for college. At the college level, I played under Charlie Bradshaw, Steve Sloan, George McIntyre and Bill Parcells. Being coached by these men was a great lesson in life itself. All of these people have greatly impacted not just my athletic career, but have helped influence and shape my success in business and everyday life." Mike Wilbourn and his wife Melanie live in Owens Cross Roads, and have three sons, David, Matthew and John.
