Robert Malone was born on March 14, 1957, in Limestone County, the tenth of 13 children. He attended Athens High School, and played football and ran track for three seasons under the direction of Coach Larry McCoy. While at Athens, Robert made All-Tennessee Valley Conference in football, and he was named as Player of the Week several times by the local newspaper. Robert's family moved to Huntsville in 1974, and to the delight of Coach Max Burleson, he enrolled at Johnson High School for his Senior year. Robert was named the Most Valuable Player in the city, a major factor in Johnson's winning the Region Ten Football Championship his Senior year. Robert was selected to play in the North-South All-Star Football Game that year. When signing day came in 1975, Coach Johnny Majors signed Robert to a football scholarship to the University of Tennessee. In the spring of 1975, Robert was named to Alabama's All-State Track and Field team. While at the University of Tennessee, he lettered three years and received his B.S. Degree in Education. After graduation from the University of Tennessee, Robert returned to Huntsville and began coaching and teaching at Davis Hills Middle School. His Davis Hills Middle School Football teams won nine Middle School City Championships, and his Girls Basketball teams, from 1998 to 2001, won 77 games and lost only 4 on the way to winning four straight Middle School Basketball Championships. Robert became the Head Girls Basketball Coach at Johnson High School in 2001, and continues in that role today with a winning percentage of almost eighty percent. In 2003, the Birmingham News selected him as the 5A Coach of the Year for Girls Basketball in the State of Alabama. When asked about individuals that have made an impact on his life, he said, "Trying to single out individuals who had the greatest impact toward my athletic accomplishments is very difficult because I have been blessed over the years to have many individuals that have inspired and helped me along the way, such as my family, teachers, coaches and friends who have supported me down through the years." He is a member of First Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Dr. Julius Scruggs, and is a member of the Brotherhood Chorus. Robert is married to Winifred Blair Malone and they have two children, Broderick and Robert, and one granddaughter, Amani.
