Bobby Cattage was a star basketball player at Johnson High School and later at Auburn University. He averaged 23 points and 19 rebounds his senior season at Johnson and led Johnson to a 22-5 record. Bobby was named Parade Magazines First Team All-American Team and was picked Prep All-America by Street and Smith Magazine after his senior season. He was also selected as First Team All-South by the Orlando Sentinel that season. His career averages at Johnson were 21 points and 17 rebounds. He signed a scholarship to play basketball at Auburn University under Coach Sonny Smith. Bobby started 22 games as a freshman at Auburn and averaged 8.6 points per game and 6.3 rebounds. Bobby led Auburn in scoring (15.9) and rebounding (9.3) his sophomore season. That year he was selected to the Big Sun All-Tournament Team. He finished his sophomore season as the S.E.C. s fourth leading scorer and the top returning rebounder. After his sophomore season he suffered a ruptured appendix. The resulting surgery and hospitalization caused him to lose more than 70 pounds and miss part of his junior season. Bobby fought back and once again became a powerful inside force for the Tigers by the end of his Junior year and continuing into his senior year.
