Bill Childress was known by everyone in the athletic community in the early days of Huntsville Athletics. He served as an official for nearly every sport that held competitions in the Huntsville area. He refereed at the YMCA, independent leagues, and even 2 On 2 basketball competitions if he was needed. Bill also served the youth of this community as a Pee-Wee football coach as well as coaching the boys as they grew older. Many of his former players are now members of The Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame. Bill also founded the Gray Y Boys Club to serve the underprivileged children in Southwest Huntsville. He was given the nick name Ironman Childress after pitching every inning in an all day softball tournament. Bill Childress is being posthumously inducted to the Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame.
