Donald was born in Madison County on July 9th, 1935. Donald grew up in West Huntsville. After attending West Huntsville High for two years, Donald enrolled at S.R. Butler High. During his two years at Butler he gained wide recognition as one of the best halfbacks in North Alabama. He played halfback and linebacker for the undefeated 1952 Rebels and was named to All-State and All-American teams. Donald was highly recruited by several major colleges including, Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt. He was offered scholarships from Memphis State and Tennessee Tech. He signed with Auburn in 1953, but transferred following his freshman year to Tennessee Tech where he was a two year starter, playing halfback and linebacker. He graduated from Tennessee Tech in 1956 with a degree in business administration. He returned to Huntsville in 1956, where he continued his love of sports and began coaching PeeWee football at the West Huntsville YMCA, where he was first introduced to the sport. He volunteered his time until 1975. During these years he coached baseball and football and also served on the Northwest West YMCA Board of directors. In addition to the above he found time to raise a family and work toward two careers: one as Manager of Subcontracts for Lockheed Martin Missiles and Space and the other as a commissioned officer with Alabama Army National Guard. He spent 39 1/2 years as a Guardsman and retired as a Brigadier General in 1994. Donald and his wife Bettye have one son, Donald Scott Crutcher.
