Brooks Gentle, a Huntsville native born on May 3rd, 1940 was destined to become one of Butler Highs and the city of Huntsvilles athletic greats. Brooks was an all round athlete. He had the distinction of playing for five of Huntsville-Madison County Hall of Fame coaches: Cotton Rogers, Fulton Hamilton, Lester Sonny Boy Westbrooks, James Talley and Hub Myhand. Coach Hamilton said, Brooks was one of the best running backs to ever play for me. Brooks star shown brightly at Butler from 1957 to 1959. He was All-TVC in football from 1957-59, All-District in baseball from 1957-59, All-County in basketball in 1957 and was the Acme Athlete of the year for 1959. 1959 was a great year for Brooks. At the completion of his football career at Butler he signed a football scholarship to attend Vanderbilt University. During the spring of the year the Cleveland Indians signed Brooks to a pro baseball contract. Brooks played in the Indians farm system for three years. Brooks continued to play semi-pro baseball with Jim Talley and the Huntsville Merchants making two appearances in the National Baseball Congress tournament in Wichita, Kansas. Brooks is a retired U.S. Government employee, working with the government from 1962 to 1998. He is married to Linda Gentle and they have four children; Edward Jr., Amy, Jessica and Alex.
