Madonna Rogers Holladay grew up a gym rat, and with good reason: her father, the late T.E. Cotton Rogers, was the longtime head basketball coach at Butler High School. Hes the one who had the greatest impact on my athletic accomplishments, says Mrs. Holladay. I was practically raised in the gym. My earliest memories are riding on a bus and going to ball games with my father. He touched the lives of many people, throughout his athletic career. Ive tried to follow his example, and I hope Ive been able to touch even a small percentage of the people that he did. Madonna, who is married to former Athens College basketball star Lynn Holladay, neednt worry. She also touched the lives of many during her teaching and coaching career, first at Evangel School and later at Sparkman High from 1973-1998. She started the girls' basketball, volleyball and track programs at Sparkman, compiling admirable records in each. But shell be best remembered as the organizer and coach of the Sparkman cheerleading teams, who won seven state championships and three national championships (1993, 1997 and 1998). Thanks to Madonna Holladay, 29 cheerleaders from Sparkman have attended college on cheerleader scholarships.
