Randy Hollingsworth starred in basketball at Gurley Central School, Butler High School, and later at the University of Alabama. While in high school, Randy was named to the All-City team, the All-Tennessee Valley team, the All-District team, and the All-State team three times following the 1964, 1965, and 1966 seasons. In 1966, he was selected as the Most Valuable Player for the State Basketball Tournament. He was selected as the Most Valuable Player for the Gadsden Tournament of Champions in 1965 and 1966. Randy was named Mr. Basketball for the state of Alabama and to the All-American team in 1966. Also in 1966, he was chosen Player of the Year by the Black Athletic Boosters Club of Huntsville. Randy signed a scholarship to play basketball for the University of Alabama and was a member of the Alabama Lettermans Club while at the Capstone.
