Max Kelly was an outstanding athlete at both Athens and Cullman High Schools before he went on to college fame at the University of Alabama. Max was very fortunate to have been coached by three of the greats of high school athletics, Grady and Ferman Elmore and John Meadows. He credits them with having the most influence on his athletic career. Max was a three sports star in high school, lettering in basketball, baseball and football. On the gridiron as a guard and fullback is where he made the biggest splash. He was All-County, All-TVC his sophomore and junior years. His senior year he was co-captain of the team and scored 5 touchdowns in a game with Hartselle. He was named to the All-State team and played in the high school football all-star game in Tuscaloosa. Max was awarded a football scholarship to the University of Alabama. He was a three-year starter for the Crimson Tide, two as a guard and one as a fullback. In 1956 he was selected as the MVP. He obtained everlasting recognition with his hand and footprints enshrined at the Denny Chimes Walk of Fame. Max also was a catcher on the Tide baseball team. To compliment Max Kellys outstanding career in athletics he is considered one of the finest ever basketball officials in the state of Alabama.
