Mark McDaniel excelled in football, basketball, and baseball while a student at Madison Academy. As a freshman, Mark started as quarterback for the football team and averaged 14 points per game for the varsity basketball team. That year he was named to the Basketball All-County Tournament Team. During his sophomore year, Mark averaged 20.2 points per game in basketball and was the only sophomore named to The Huntsville News All-Rocket City Team. Mark averaged more than 30 points per game his junior year on the basketball team and was named to The Huntsville News All-City Team, The Huntsville Times All-County Team, and The All-Area Team. In his senior year on the basketball court, Mark set scoring records that still stand. In three games he scored over 50 points. His highest point total that year was 58, which he achieved twice against Mars Hill and New Hope. He scored over 1,000 points his senior year (over 2,000 in his career) for an average off 40.2 points per game. After his senior season, Mark was named to The Huntsville Times All-County Team, The Huntsville News All-City Team, the Birmingham Post Herald and Birmingham News All-State Team, the Coaches and Athletes All-American Team, and The Sunkist Growers All-American Team. Mark signed scholarships in baseball and basketball with Athens College in 1970. He was offered a baseball contract with the St. Louis Cardinals after his freshman year, but chose to stay and finish school, which he did in two years.
